With the Indian Ocean on one side and lagoons and river mouths threaded through it, the Garden Route is seafood country. Linefish, mussels, calamari, prawns and the legendary Knysna oyster all turn up fresh and unfussy here. These are the places worth planning around — and you can see every seafood spot on the route in one list.

Beachfront feasts

For the full experience — toes in the sand, platters of fresh shellfish — De Vette Mossel at Great Brak River is a Garden Route institution. In Wilderness, Mozambik serves Portuguese-style flame-grilled seafood and peri-peri, while roadside Oysters R Us is the easy N2 pit-stop for oysters and platters.

Fish and chips done right

Sometimes you just want proper fish and chips. Seemeeu Vis en Chips in Great Brak River has locals queuing for crisp, fresh portions, and Indraf by Seester does the classic in a riverside Klein Brak River setting.

Seafood with a view

For seafood and scenery together, Amelia’s at The Plettenberg offers oceanfront dining in Plett, and Pinnacle Point serves the catch from a clifftop in Mossel Bay. See more restaurants with sea views.

The Knysna oyster

No seafood tour is complete without oysters from the Knysna lagoon — read our dedicated guide to where to eat Knysna oysters.
