Knysna is the jewel of the Garden Route — built around a lagoon, framed by the dramatic Heads, and blessed with a food scene that rewards anyone who looks past the obvious. Here’s where to eat, from sunrise coffee to a proper night out. (You can also see every restaurant in Knysna with hours and directions.)

Breakfast and brunch

There’s no better start than East Head Café, perched at the lagoon mouth where the sea pushes through the Heads — get there early for a window table. In town, Salt & Petal does fresh, generous brunches that suit families, while Art Café on Queen pairs wholesome food with a working art gallery. For specialty coffee, The Daily Coffee Café is a reliable central pick.

Lunch with a view

Knysna is at its best beside the water. Head to Thesen Islands for Nest Food Bar, a modern spot with craft cocktails and a waterfront setting, or settle in at the Oak Leaf Restaurant & Gourmet Deli on the Belvidere side for estate dining away from the crowds.

Dinner and drinks

For something with energy, Knysna Gin Distillery & Cocktailbar serves craft gin, cocktails and seriously good burgers. Bao Wow brings Asian-fusion bao buns to the Foundation precinct, and Red Bridge Brewing Co is the spot for wood-fired pizza, house-brewed beer and a dog-friendly garden.

The Knysna oyster experience

You can’t visit Knysna without eating oysters. Whether you prefer them wild or cultivated, the lagoon is one of the best places in the country to try them — we’ve written a full guide on where to eat Knysna oysters.

Plan the rest of your trip

Knysna sits roughly midway along the route, making it a perfect base. From here it’s an easy drive to Plettenberg Bay in the east or Sedgefield and Wilderness to the west. Browse more by sea views, seafood or coffee shops, or see the full Garden Route guide.
